DOG VACCINATIONS

New York state law mandates that all dogs / puppies be vaccinated against rabies by the time they are four months old (three months in New York City) and they must receive booster shots either annually or every three years, depending on the duration of the particular type of shot. The DHP vaccine which protects against distemper, hepatitus and Parvo is also highly recommended for all dogs, along with the Kennel Cough/Bordatella (KC) vaccine for those who come in contact with other dogs. Other less common shots are vaccines against lyme disease, leptospirosis and giardia, which may or may not be necessary depending on where you take your dog and where you live in the state. No one in New York has an excuse for not having their dog vaccinated against rabies. In New York City a rabies vaccination is under $20 and all other cities in New York provide free vaccines regularly. Most shots, other than the rabies shot are given at one year with boosters every one to three years.

LEASH LAWS

New York state, requires that all dogs be restrained when off their owner's property; however the laws do differ from city to city. For the past twenty years New York City has allowed puppies and dogs to be off their leashes during certain hours at designated parks. Dogs are not allowed on playgrounds, swimming pools, fountains, zoos, ball fields, basketball, handball or tennis courts; and many beaches. In 1978 New York was the first state to pass a "pooper scooper" law which required owners to pick up after their dogs. Disobeying the law can result in a $50 fine.

LICENSES

All dogs in New York must be licensed and the tag must be attached to the dog's collar whenever the dog is in a public place. In New York City the fee for a license is $8.50 for a dog that is spayed or neutered and $34 for a dog that is not. Owners whose dogs are not licensed may be subject to a fine. If your dog gets lost and is not wearing a tag and/or microchip, recovery of the dog will be nearly impossible. For the past few years New York has considered making it mandatory for all dogs to have microchips implanted. This would not take the place of licensing, but the chip would include all licensing and contact information.

DOGS IN VEHICLES

New York is one of fourteen states which prohibits leaving your dog confined in a vehicle; however this only applies if conditions are such that the dog's life is in danger, such as extreme weather conditions or lack of ventilation. Violation can result in a fine up to $250. Most states do not have laws against transporting pets in open vehicles. New York is no exception; however it should be noted that hundreds of puppies and adult dogs all over the country are injured or killed every year because of this unsafe practice.

DOG PARKS

There are at least fifty-two off-leash dog parks in New York City alone and countless others all over the state. Most are open from dawn until dusk and have restrooms, poop bags, water fountains and plenty of shade trees and benches available for owners to relax while supervising their dogs. Some even offer wading pools so dogs can cool off in the hot summers and canine-agility playgrounds for added fun. Some dog parks are private and charge a fee but many are run by the parks department and are free of charge. Generally only sociable, neutered dogs who know how to get along with others are allowed--no vicious or aggressive dogs. Owners are legally responsible for any injuries or damages caused by their dog. Keep in mind that each park has different rules which apply.
